So what are the two fears to overcome to start a business:
Fear of Starting
Fear of Asking
Fear of Starting
This is all about just getting started and using experiments to overcome insecurities.
Fear of Asking
This is the problem with the fear of rejection and when I think of it, I can tell you I have more issues with this one.
The moment I have impressive skills, an amazing product, every advantage in the world and I never sell a thing? Then the issue is that I cannot face another person and ask for what I want.simply as that.
How about you? What are you mostly afraid of? What is you holding you back? The fear of starting or of asking?
But for both there are solutions, and they often start with our mindset.
Reframing Both
Fear of Starting becomes small experiments.
Fear of Asking becomes Rejection is Desirable.
So let’s start with Experimenting.
Why does it work?
Because experiments are just that - experiments. And with all experiments, finally they work out, step by step by step. It is with everything that you learn. You try something, fail. You try again, fail. Try again, fail. But the more you do it, the more you fail. Until at one point you make a bit of money. And then you iterate, and then you make a bit more and so on, until at one point you make enough that you are happy with what you earn and how you built your business.
As easy as that.
Noah calls that
Creator’s Courage.
And it reminds me of a book i read a while ago by Rollo May that was called ‘The Courage to Create’.
I always loved creation, but I fail in one essential step - the step of asking. I fear rejection more than anything I fear, and in that sense it is time to let go of it and embrace that fear.
And you know what. It feels like a muscle.
I overcame my fear of flying. Then I will also overcome my fear of rejection. 😀
What are fears that are holding you back?
What now is an experiment?
In it’s simplest form, according to Noah, “it is a never-ending cycle of starting and trying new things, asking whether people will pay for those things, and then trying it again based on what you’ve learned.
If you are afraid to start or ask, you can’t experiment. And if you can’t experiment, you can’t do business.”
And he advises us to make it fun: “Make it fun and you’ll overcome your fear.”
So, let’s have some fun, shall we? 😀
Sure, we shall!
It is time for playful experimentation, for learning, playing with ideas, solving our own problems, helping other people and getting paid all the while! 🤩
